Automate the job application process
Date: August 2017 - February 2018
Role: Visual & Interaction Design Intern
Skills: UI, Visual, Branding & Interaction
Deliverables: Website & Branding Design
Context
Recruitmate is a machine learning web app that aims to help students to lessen the job application process.
I joined as an intern during the beta testing of this early start-up.
My Input
Including the founder, there are only 2 product designers in here so I was lucky to be involved in every project. During my internship, I....
Conducted a heuristic evaluation of the previous Recruitmate website
Carried out competitor analysis, collected inspiration to form moodboard
Contributing creative solutions for brand new information architecture and interaction
Individually iterated all UI redesign using Figma
Prepare design spec and collaborate with developers to implement the new design through Zeplin
Brand Design for social media marketing
How can we increase user subscription rate?
The web app gained lots of traction, as it help users to save time by applying to multiple online job postings in just a click of a button.
Analyzing the Google Analytics, I realized that there is a high bounce rate and drop off rate for users. What this means is that users are leaving the homepage without clicking on to the next page. I realized, there is no point in driving potential customers to the website if they are not purchasing the subscription. I decided to take on the responsibility of improving the overall website experience with the goal of boosting Recruitmate's subscription rate.
The Homepage before the re-design
I cold-called and conducted user testings to further analyze and understand the user's mental model in navigating through the website.
To save time, the team purchased a new logo, changing the original robot to a rocket. However, feeling that it's too simple, I added strokes and has a color contrast between the two sides. Additionally, I changed the window from an "R" to a magnifying glass, relating to the idea that we Recruitmate, are helping user to search for the next big opportunities.

This is the final mockup of the results page using Figma. After conducting some user interviews I determined the most valuable and useful information to display. The colours were adjusted to comply with accessibility guidelines and the card layout was modified to best handle various screen sizes.

The visual style of the highlight was also adapted to bring user attention to the problem area without covering any essential information.
Rather than the generic jpeg image, it was replaced with fun vector image that reflected the young and vibrant feel of Recruitmate.
By clicking on the search bar, users can easily search for the roles they would like to apply for, and the location of the job. I suggested in removing the country filter to facilitate faster searching experience. By incorporating the average salary of the position, users can be more motivated in the job applying process.
Users can select all the jobs that they would like, or they could select all the available roles from the search. We followed the heuristic design, and added black chat bubbles to allow users to be informed about what other actions could be done. The number (51) on the side allows users to know how many jobs they have selected.
In order to let the users know about the difference in the price plans, I played on the rocket logo to show the hierarchy and the performance. The association of the rockets to the different pricing plans allow the users to understand the performance of the plan. (The bigger the rocket, the further you can go in your job search!)
By looking through the email replies from the excited users, we consolidated the data and added statistics. At the same time, I suggested in added clear, professional photos of the users to gain credibility for the reviews.
A video can get a message across in a way that words can’t. By showing the process in simple animation, the visual aspect will drive up user engagement. By following heuristic’s design rule 3, we gave user control and freedom to play the video, rather than let the video auto-play on itself.
By working closely with the development team from the start, I was able to learn about the technical possibility feasibilities from the beginning. Within a first month of relaunching the website, we increased our subscription rate by 23%. Furthermore, the majority of the users signed up for the premium monthly plan.

In order to determine the success of a product, we have to ensure that our design could help users and business to achieve their objectives and goals.
Recruitmate in a way, expanded my horizon by showing me what product design is, and how design could be implemented with technology and business, something that I didn't even know that is possible. Ultimately, made me realize that this is what I want to do as a career.
